The 3rd and most recent generation of ECWCS is called the Extended Climate Warfighter Clothing System . Built for insulation, layering and ventilation, Gen III is the most sophisticated version of the system yet. It is significantly less bulky and much lighter than previous generations ECWCS and includes twelve garments built out across seven levels (or layers) . The philosophy behind the system is that the air trapped in between each layer will provide insulation and layers can be added and removed as needed. The ECWCS system provides adequate protection for individuals in moderate to sub-zero climates . GEN III, Level I Level 1 is a primary insulation that wicks moisture for evaporative cooling in mild climates, keeps skin dry and serves as a base layer for the system. Constructed with highly breathable polyester knitted fabric, the garments reduce chaffing and increased comfort during movement. These garments provide extra warmth and stay dry in cool weather. They also wick moisture for evaporative cooling in mild climates . They are contoured long tail for additional protection from the elements, reduce chaffing and increased comfort during movement.
